Structural pattern of the Kłodnica fault zone in the Halemba coalfield (Upper Silesian Coal Basin)


Observations made in 7 roadways driven through the Kłodnica dislocation (Tab. 1, Fig. 1) completed with reinterpretation of detailed planes of eaerlier workings help describing horizontal and vertical geometrical diversity of this large fault zone.

Strike of the zone varies within the Halemba coalfield (Fig. 2) making curvature of a fault trace visible. Fissure size and hade are not constant, also gouge filling differs. Hackle marks, small drag folds and compaction synclines accompany fault fissures. Width of the fault zone changes as measured together with secondary faults. Adjacent faults split and rejoin, their trends and geometries vary. Internal variations in the throw of faults are noted.

Structural pattern of the zone yields evidence supporting the opinion that Kłodnica fault grew in several successive slip stages, mostly in ductile strain condition, partially due to sinistral translation under NE-SW compression, controlling sometimes the Upper Carboniferous sedimentation subsequently.
